CORONA VIRUS AND CORRUPTION (II)

While the Ag. Chairman EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, found himself in the news for all the wrong reasons owing to his assertion that he strongly believes “the corona virus is spread by corruption”, it appears he did have a point. Had his team not been in such a hurry to spin the story, he could have further elucidated what he meant by the time the video hit the internet.

Apparently investigations have revealed that unscrupulous and backhand practices in China’s public health management systems may have fueled the spread of the virus which is currently said to have claimed up to 2000 lives worldwide (Reuters) with more than 42,000 cases of the virus across China alone (BBC news).

Reports by the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) in the US allege that Chinese public health officials are quick to turn a blind eye to unscrupulous practices when bribed and readily bypass standard checks especially with regard to smuggling of illicit wildlife which had been banned after the SARS outbreak of 2003.
