Beautiful skin and hair don’t just happen overnight. Your great-grand mother with the lustrous, waist-length hair whom you swear never washed it? She was doing something to that hair to make it happy enough to grow that long. Your 60 year-old aunt who has 7 kids, 3 grand babies, and looks like she’s 29? She has a routine she’s following. Good genes can only get you so far: you need to be deliberate about taking care of yourself.
So, here are 6 beauty tips for you to glow like the queen you are.
- Oil is your Friend
Of course, we mean natural oils like coconut oil, shea butter, olive oil, cocoa butter, and not the palm oil your mind immediately jumped to😆. These oils are rich in fatty acids, protein, and Vitamin E, and perform a range of functions for both your hair and skin. They can be conditioners, moisturizers, cleansers, scar removers, and even toners.
- Black Soap, Your Natural Skin Toner
This black soap boasts of the ashes of banana leaves or palm fronds mixed with palm oil as a soap base; and honey, lemon juice, aloe vera, and cam wood as other added ingredients. If you are patient enough, this traditional black soap will work wonders for your skin, exfoliating, moisturizing, lightening, and toning it for that bright, healthy sheen you want.
- Get Sun Protection
Don’t let anyone fool you: black skin is also susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer. Make sure you use sun block or creams with SPF, and always wear sunglasses or hats when you’re out in the sun. Or take an umbrella, if you’re feeling fancy.
- Drink. More. Water
Yes, frequent trips to the bathroom are annoying, but drinking at least 2 litres of water daily does great things for your hair and skin. Staying hydrated on water (less sugary drinks and alcohol, please) improves blood circulation, flushes out toxins, and makes sure your internal organs all have a perfect environment to function in.
- Eat Well
Moderation is key. Eat your vegetables, fruits, carbohydrates, and meat in the right amounts, and your skin will reflect it. Seriously, you are what you eat.
If you hate jogging, that is fine: did you know that a 30-minute walk every day probably does more for you than jogging miles 3 times a week? For at least 30 minutes every day, do something that gets you moving, gets your heart pumping and your pores sweating, and see the marvels that your skin and hair and entire body will show you.
At least 7 hours of sleep every day is the ideal thing: that’s why it’s called ‘beauty sleep’. Sleeping well makes you beautiful! And that is because your body gets to repair and replace worn out cells to give you that glow that gets people talking.
